Adler’s Iron Men: Andrew Jack & Randy Perry Ride for a Cause
This September, Adler’s own Andrew Jack and Randy Perry will be doing something that defies logic – they will be riding their bikes for over 233 KM from Jasper to Lake Louise. Are they doing this just for fun? Maybe (according to Randy he has been forcefully encouraged by Andrew), but they’re also doing it for a good cause.
They’re participating in the Iron Bike Tour in support of Young Life Canada. The entire tour will take place between September 9 – 11 and has two distance options: the namby-pamby 108KM (which we could do in our sleep right?) from Jasper to the Columbia Icefields; and the super-human distance of 233 KM. (The boys will have to ride their 233 KM in one long day - September 10.) Andrew is an avid biker and has completed the Iron Bike in the past while Randy has prepared voraciously by biking a total of 73 KM on flat, paved ground in the past couple of weeks but feels he is sort-of ready to take on that mountainous route… That’s the spirit!
The annual event is help to raise money for Young Life Canada, a group that promotes relationship building with children and teens throughout Canada. The group aims to communicate about love, faith and acceptance through their camps, clubs and community efforts and get kids involved in the church community. In a society filled with anger, hurt and disappointment, Young Life provides a beacon for those kids that need direction, value and some faith in their lives.
We wanted to find out exactly what makes Andrew participate in this ride over and over again:
-
What inspired you to do this? I’ve been involved with Young Life for 6 years as a volunteer. I saw kids that got mentored become volunteers – I saw their system working. A lot of kids need mentorship and positive role models.
-
How long did it take you to convince Randy to do this? About 3-4 years. We’ve been mountain biking together regularly but we’ve never really done road riding together.
-
Is the ride dangerous? The weather is a deciding factor as to the ride being a little bit of fun or no fun at all. (If it snows, it’s pretty tough on the mountains.)We’re on a busy highway and some of the descents can get hairy too.
-
How much Gatorade will you consume? About 10L and all sorts of other obscene fake energy foods: gel packs, energy bars... It makes your gut churn.
-
Tell me why you’re doing this again? After the ride you get to hang out with people that want to see kids succeed. This ride is about love and volunteers and the value of positive role models. The party afterwards makes it all worthwhile.
If you would like to support Adler’s very own Iron Men Andrew and Randy on their Iron bike Tour, please visit: http://www.younglife.ca/ironbike2011 and click on “Support a Rider”. (Tax receipts will be issued for all donations over $10.)
Adler wishes Randy and Andrew good luck, good weather and a fantastic ride.

Don’t Sketch & Drive… It’s the Law
As of September 1, 2011, Alberta drivers are going to feel the pain of texting, grooming and sketching (really?) while driving. Not only can you seriously harm yourself or kill someone else, but you will also get a whopping $172 fine! Now, we’ve all done it – even you – and it’s a shameful practice. Putting our lipstick on in the SUV, talking to our colleague on the phone, random sketching (again, really?) and it’s got to stop! Did you know that almost 30% off all accidents are due to driver distraction? It’s dangerous, it’s unnecessary and it’s got to stop. So this September, take a vow to stop fidgeting behind the wheel; make our streets safer Adler employees! Follow the rules below:
-
NO cell phone – period. No texting, no chatting, no emailing.
-
NO eating.
-
NO electronic devices. (If you can’t stop playing video games while you’re driving you may be stupid.)
-
NO GPS programming.
-
NO personal grooming.
-
NO pets in the front seat, no making kissy-faces at your pet… just put the darn dog in the back.
-
And absolutely NO writing, printing or SKETCHING! (One last time – really?)
In honour of what we think is a life-saving new law, Adler has come up with a few more distractions that were left off the list.
NO driving around in funny looking vehicles.
Not only are you distracting yourself and others… dude – you look stupid.
NO children behind the wheel.
(Especially this loony.)
NO driving with a guy in the hood of your car while wearing a traffic cone on his head.
WTF?
NO driving with…
Um, well… maybe just let someone else drive if you’re this woman.
But seriously folks...
We kid, we jest but Adler applauds the new law and the Government of Alberta for instating it – finally. Now if only we could do something about those women drivers. (Kidding…)
